Now off you! Half

That Sunday in New Zealand not holy, I've already described. Therefore, it is not surprising that we have launched the renovation of our house in Kaitoke Street. Andreas has ever the "heavy equipment" in position, and with the floor of the "not-terrace" started. There, soon the children and my office will be. Can you imagine today hardly ...

Tina has used the day to consider more closely the issue of recycling. " She has everything Useful at the level of "Soon-no-more-terrace" in the back of the garden re-used. Nevertheless, the site is getting wilder, there are already areas that allow us to imagine how it will look like in the future. At Tina really is a landscape gardener has been lost ...

years NZ

Today we are half a year in New Zealand. Actually, time to draw conclusions. This half year has been as intense as in normal circumstances maybe 10 years - for better or for worse. That is why we are all currently not so for conclusion. We are all happy about Kaitoke Street and can not wait to be there creatively. The conclusion must therefore wait is, but certainly ... ;-)

Here's a previously unpublished image Very first after our arrival in New Zealand on 7/29/2010, taken by a possibly 19-year tourist who has held the probably the first time in her life is a camera in hand (therefore not a criticism, please!):

Settlement Day

Settlement Day is called in NZ, the day on which a property changes, officially the owner. On the day the purchase price paid and handed over the keys. Our Settlement Day for Kaitoke St. was the day before, on 25 January. That is, the house belongs to us now, officially, no ifs and buts! And of course we immediately canceled on Tuesday with the first things: a garden table with 4 chairs. So we could enjoy our first meal at noon yesterday on the makeshift patio. How should it be different with superb fish and chips from Nannie's. It was beautiful, almost unreal: our own little piece of New Zealand with breathtaking views, the exuberant vegetation and a cicada concert prostration knees.

now is, however, quickly continue with the implementation and extension measures. Next week we start with the Demolition. If all goes as planned, we will move in late March and will live for another 1-2 months on the job site. Just in time for our first visit from Germany, but surely all be ready ... ;-)

The next GIFT OF CHRISTMAS!

On 24 January, exactly a month after Christmas, came a small but long package here in Raglan. We had SLOT! opened. Inside were two DVDs, Christmas with Astrid Lindgren and head over heels, plus a lot of Haribo, chocolate with ginger and almonds, bath essence and soul sun tea! ;
featured Since we find that it was the package of Anne, my aunt from Mainz, which took soooo long. WONDERFUL :-) Mom has already aufgefuttert all chocolate and Nils and I have been drinking the tasty tea, though said to be the father for him. The DVD's are also great. Thank you!

Raglan: Beyond the breakers

The New Zealand Herald, New Zealand's largest daily newspaper, had in yesterday's issue an article about Raglan. Nice way to describe the place properly, so have just copied him to talk ...

Raglan: Beyond the breakers

By Paul Rush 12:00 PM Monday Jan 17, 2011

Paul Rush dives below Raglan's surface to sample its many shore-based attractions.
I have fond memories of sitting on the Manu Bay foreshore many years ago, watching surfers catch the foam-flecked curling barrels rolling in from the Tasman Sea. It's a fascinating spectacle observing the antics of groovy young grommets on miniature boards and hardcore veterans executing slick 90-degree turns. In the past I've thought of Raglan only in surfing terms, but recently I heard there's much more to the town than famous waves. What I'm seeking on this visit is a hands-on mini-break, focused on total relaxation, strolling around town and sipping freshly brewed flat whites.

Arriving in the centre of town, I notice for the first time just how picturesque Bow St, the main drag, is with its central row of phoenix palms spreading out over the roadway between a row of ancient pohutukawa trees. The trees give the town an exotic seaside character, but it's the shops and cafes that speak of lifestyle comforts. I don't wander far down Bow St before sensing a certain feeling in the air. It's a kind of bleached-hair, barefoot vibe that suggests a culture of sun, sand and surf. There's also an unmistakable laid-back pace of life, reminiscent of late-1950s New Zealand.

Bow St is made for strolling. I pass curio stores, an op-shop, plant store, design gallery, surf shops and a collective craft shop. The Harbour View Hotel stops me in my tracks. It's a grand, two-storey, colonial-style building that looks down on the bustling main street in a benignly paternal manner. Directly opposite is the modern Black Sand Restaurant and Bar, where lunchtime crowds spill out on to outside tables to enjoy the cool harbour breeze. I savour an excellent vegetable soup and French bread while watching the passing parade of holidaymakers. The restaurant staff tell me that Black Sand is a popular venue for Sunday music sessions, with cabaret songs, Irish ballads, Latin and soul. The town has several upmarket restaurants and cafes; Zaragoza, which offers Burton's pure espresso coffee; Orca, which has views over the tranquil harbour; and Vinnie's "World of Eats" BYO, which presents a tropical look in a historic kauri cottage with a thatched veranda. Tongue & Groove offers all-day coffee and funky food in a retro atmosphere. The Marlin Cafe & Grill has pride of place at the town wharf, where it specialises in fish and chips and "chef your own grill" platters. I am intrigued with the way Raglan has created a modern cafe society in the Ponsonby mode. The requisite elements are there - soy lattes and long blacks, paninis and pizzas, sushi and quiche, plus vegetarian and vegan fare.

There's even a microcosm of Auckland's central-city alleyway life in the form of Volcom Lane, home to eclectic boutique stores. I'm finding it easy to see how a keen surfer may come to Rag Town, as they call it, for a long weekend riding the big swells, hanging around the cafe tables swapping yarns - and then decide to stay here for good. It's just that appealing.

The friendly folk at the visitor centre suggest an afternoon drive around Mt Karioi, aka "The Sleeping Lady", the dormant volcano that dominates the landscape. On Wainui Point, four Maori stone carvings stand proudly in a geometric garden setting, providing a dramatic foreground to a magnificent view of Ngarunui Beach. Orderly lines of white-capped breakers tumble on to the broad sands, and black-suited surfers bob like seals in the distance. The road winds past Manu Bay and Whale Bay until the forested flanks of Mt Karioi engulf it in a mantle of overhanging bush. Whaanga Rd takes me to the lookout over Te Toto Gorge, a 100m drop that takes the breath away. From here, a bush track leads up to the summit of the great mountain. It's a five-hour return trek, so will have to wait for another visit. A local youth informs me with pride that, on a clear day, the view from this lofty sentinel encompasses three harbours (Aotea, Raglan and Kawhia) and four volcanoes (Karioi, Pirongia, Taranaki and Ruapehu). Explorers Abel Tasman and James Cook recorded a sighting of Mt Karioi in their expedition logbooks.

Continuing on my round-the-mountain odyssey, I reach Ruapuke Beach and wander along the wild, black-sand expanse in complete solitude, absorbed in the sounds of the ocean, the seabirds soaring overhead and the stark beauty. It's a therapeutic experience. Further on, I reach the tiny settlement of Te Mata, gateway to another popular tourist attraction, the spectacular Bridal Veil Falls. A 10-minute walk brings me to a lookout over the cascade, which is 1m higher than Niagara Falls but is a narrow chute of water that responds to updrafts of wind in a unique way, creating the semblance of a veil.

Back in town, I'm ready for more sustenance and find it at the Orca Restaurant and Bar. The fresh snapper fillets leap out at me from the menu - I am in a west coast fishing port, after all. An evening stroll around the waterfront is a must-do activity. Families and couples gather on a grassy swathe at the foot of Bow St or wander over the picturesque estuary bridge to the domain and holiday park. The footbridge is a much-loved landmark from which kids leap into the water. There's a move to replace it with a higher structure, but the locals are adamant that they want to preserve the children's water-jump as a rite of passage. I watch the setting sun light up the western sky in a blaze of colour. Sunbeams burst out of the golden orb, light up the high cirrus cloud and dive into the sea, which shines like mother-of-pearl. Returning to the appropriately named Sunset Motel, the town's newest accommodation option, I reflect on my day at the seaside.

There's no doubt Raglan has undergone a form of gentrification, with its upmarket boutiques and eateries. But it's still a good old Kiwi holiday town at heart. I reckon I'm already on the town's long white wavelength.

...wäre es in Deutschland, the "sacred" to mow the lawn Sunday. In New Zealand, no problem. If we make here Sun No matter what the neighbors say. Fortunately, we have up here, no. That is why today I was able to mow our lawns and good conscience. For that is required of the tenant, which is ok. The movement is good. Especially with a blue sky, 28 degrees outside temperature and ocean views. The tenant must bring but also his own lawn mower. So have bought one, because the mowing by the mowing service (no sheep but a kiwi from the site with his wife) has cost us $ 140 (which is lots of grass!). The power lawn mower just about $ 300, so not a bad deal translated into the cost of the "Kiwi-with-woman" service provider. And as I said, movement is good. The most

said our landlord. The fact was once again today with his family. He still uses a large double garage on the property here. In it, he has his "toys": motorcycle, mini-excavators and similar equipment. Today he drove 2 hours with his Enduro the pasture in front of our house up and down. Does he like on Sunday, most of all very early. Good thing I always had an ear protection on the head.

Whether the movement, however, our landlord is doing well, I do not really. as almost always, when he is here - - Today, he came without a word and drove back. Actually, he has imagined not still with us, not spoken a single word to us. All communication is done only on the "property manager" of the brokerage agency. Maybe he's just afraid that I speak to him on the lack of lawn mowers ... Who knows?

gardening for January

In January you can do a lot, in particular when no snow and temperatures are still well above 0 °. To do there all the time. The advantage of January is that the weed does not grow, just as the shrubs, trees, flowers, etc, that no new leaves fall on the beds, in short, that the garden is simply stopped.

You can see what you has done. And for even a few weeks.

This is the growth period in summer but very different. If one has since been removed the weeds and mowed the lawn, it looks like after two weeks as bad as before (one thinks at least).

What is there now to do in gardening?
are cleaning up in front of everything. But I'm starting to just a little unimportant: Clean the flower coasters. I have at least managed to gather all the flowers coasters in one place. As has just happened a beautiful photo, I would like to present it here as well. Even that is a very beautiful work, because (at least for me) but very many, all coasters must be ausgeschrubt. But of course I get my hot water from the house. I used to time the water taken out of the rain barrel, but you learn something. Why was I so stupid at first, to freeze my fingers I can not really looking. You think too little about it but after sometimes and makes it the way you have always done. A little question of their own deeds can not probably any harm. I'll try to keep it.

Here is a list of things that I've made up my mind:

- Cut perennials
- shred as much as possible biomaterial (recycling, appropriate covering material, etc.)
- Shredder material on the garden paths scatter
- remove leaves from the flower beds
- weeds removed from the flower beds. What else is tiny now and hardly roots (you can pull it out in January and February wonderfully light), is in hot weather in a few weeks rooted quite large and strong - is genuine Sun At present it is easy!
- clean flower pot and planting
prepare - Remove Christmas
- remaining leaves from the lawn abharken
- Garden Tools function Check (let's see if I can create this time)
- cut fruit trees, if it does not freeze. The Kiwis need to be trimmed
- Straight still able to enter the flower beds with spring flowers. If it's a couple of days have been warm, it will not be possible. So with this sensitive flower beds in the garden begin

That's the thing I think so with all recently comes to mind is. Of course I've forgotten some of what is possible. It is also clear you can not beat all, but you can make in January and gardening, and just choose from the list is something that one thinks is right. What is not in January, is creating, even in February. But that is no reason to postpone it.

If one now has 10 degrees plus (like right now even), one has the feeling that it's spring and you could put almost a T-shirt. A simply incredible feeling when you had so many weeks deep freezing temperatures.
Here is an impression of a herbaceous border in my garden. In this area, according to most perennials are from 1.50 m height. One can see that there is still much to do. So let's go. Tomorrow, it is fairly warm again, I will go immediately after breakfast in the garden. Gardening calls in January.

Remove Airlock From Underfloor Coils

end of winter: When does the gardening year?

starts for me in the garden year when nature begins to stir again, to grow and sprout. Not long ago, it looked like this:
temperatures of almost 20 °, deep frozen soil and snow white in the most beautiful. The garden and the garden seemed so far away. Places like this, a hanging chair in the middle of the garden, weather resistant and to use any time, were not very attractive.

How quickly has turned the image. Two days at +10 °, and in January, have been effective with nature like a thunderclap. When you remove the leaves from the untidy flower beds, I find it under thick layers of somewhat flattened first snowdrops. Not with buds, but still bright green leaves, lack of light suffering 3-4 cm long shoots. It's incredible how nature does it.

My body clock tells me (not that I could somehow justify) that it is over now with the severe winter. Maybe my internal sensor reacts there's quite naturally? Somehow I think that it is to freeze only slightly and get more than we have temperatures like the end of February. Global warming has to somehow make it noticeable?
In conclusion, I have thought that I can now start with the addition points of the first flowers. My time put into hibernation pansies, plant and oleander, and a supposedly hardy palm (Trachycarpus fortuneii = Chamerops excelsa). All three of these plant species are a very little frost.

would thus be deemed overly brave I call this not because I thought: " I create three plants still carry into the evening quickly, "One should just quickly get into the house of oleander and Co. of course not forget the danger is to forget, of course, always great, but as written above, the winter is indeed over -... Says my feeling.

2011 is a very big year for New Zealand. Not only that you can soon buy the best windows, no, much larger events cast their shadows. I have already mentioned in the blog more often, but so gradually you start to here to count the days: the days until the start of the Rugby World Cup! The third largest sporting event in the world in such a small country which is already quite a sensation. However, if the current dominance of the New Zealand national rugby team, the All Blacks viewed in world rugby, it's sooo not surprising. That is by far the best team in world champions at home, waiting for all of New Zealand. Our Emperor would say now, "schaun'mer time." And who knows with the world championship so from pretty good (even if "we" have become home only third parties).

any rate, fever in NZ the big event (9.9.-23.10.) Counter everywhere. Even the school holidays are specially placed so that every Kiwi kid can see the final. The tickets, in particular to the games of the All Blacks, are here already acted as a second currency. Virtually impossible to still get tickets to. As you take, what you can get. So we are very excited, on 2 see October, the match between Wales and Fiji in Hamilton to. As in NZ at least as many Fijians living in Fiji itself, the South Pacific nation determined to be a hard ...

All matches of the tournament will be shown on pay-TV, which is here - as with us, too - is SKY TV. Sadly, the same except the name and the media mogul in the background, not to have a lot to do with each other. Bundesliga channel is lacking (for that I would have spent money straight). At any rate increase also the local Sky TV currently its advertising activities for the Rugby World Cup. But as it should be for New Zealand, it is always Kiwi-style!

In this spot I had on the many nice colleagues think, who have accompanied me in recent years at fairs and events: the cameramen. At this point a very special greeting to all permanent and temporary employees of the Elberfeld, Wuppertal. This spot is dedicated to you ... ;-)

Current problems - here and there ... Good intentions

currently so everyone has his own problems. Germany is struggling with a century and winter, with snow shoveling not far behind. The winning country good Schneeschipper currently provides very excellent services at my father-in Pulheim. In Pulheim! As was recently won in the snow around the year as well as FC by 4 games in a row. The older ones will remember ...

snow is less of a problem. But now hangs out another hardship on New Zealand coasts. Just in time for the summer holidays reading reinforced by sharks that come unpleasantly close to the swimming beaches. So far nothing has happened yet, that can be said, moreover, certainly for the shark History of New Zealand (unlike Australia's neighbors). But for a shark-phobic people like me - in thanks to the "white shark" on Video2000 Plücker family's television room sometime in the early 80s - is the course handing (as appropriate at this point). Short term I had even flirted so, go here in Raglan to time in the water. But, as I know, I step to the smooth hammerhead shark lurking on the fin. No, no, better not ...

This time the front page of today's New Zealand Herald, after all, the largest newspaper in New Zealand (then there must be dramatic to be, right?):

PS: I just wonder whether the English actually and the term "silly season" is? :-)

Crossroad Specialized

year're traditionally a good opportunity to make good resolutions. So I've done much in 2011, to move around more. Yes can not be that my wife sometimes runs marathons and I'm exhausted at the net carrying three cans of water on ... ;-)

So today I was the first time with Nicholas, who has that is also needed on the beach to "run" around there. Or rather, we are once gone quickly, new German means "walking" well.

The track is of course a dream. Today low tide, the beach was correspondingly huge wide. There cavorting on Sunday evening a few dozen people to a few kilometers. A scene to dream. Since it is almost gone into a trance, so that our ambitious goal achieved relatively easily. An hour we were underway and we have set out to repeat the now possible daily.

look And sometimes, when the fitness has then increased appreciably, comes next maybe something in consideration, as we are seeing just the beach - and were allowed to film:

Oh yes, it was quite windy today, you can hear. But on the other hand can Sony, EMI and company have at least nothing ... :-)
